Director's subject files, 1973-1981.

RG 84-5 contains the director's subject files from the Michigan Department of State Highways and Transportation and the Michigan Department of Transportation for the years 1973-1981. Contains memoranda, correspondence, meeting minutes, and contracts. There are a wide range of topics discussed. Included is air pollution, railroads, shipping, and the Zilwaukee Bridge. In the alphabetically arranged correspondence, one can find letters to state senators and representatives, as well as U.S. senators and representatives regarding issues relating to transportation. Examples include the speed limit in Inkster, the rest areas of Michigan, truck weight limits, and the Benton Harbor Airport tower being closed. There are letters to and from Governor Milliken. Many of the Governor's letters were written for him by transportation workers in response to a citizen's request. Also, the Governor wrote letters to the Department urging plans to implement his policies in programs such as community development and highway safety improvement. Transportation Commissioners' correspondence is also included and specific reports covering topics listed in the location guide.
